What's eating Darrell Revis? He sat out most of training camp this weekend. If you look at the media hype, it points to discontent with his contract. Some say he is holding out. Revis says it is a minor hamstring issue. Is it a physical injury or a damaged ego keeping the New York Jets' star cornerback on the sidelines?
On the sidelines
Ask Darrell Revis why he is sitting out and he will tell you it is tightness in his hamstring. Word from the Jets' camp seems to support this claim. Coach Rex Ryan does not seem too concerned with it. Neither does the defensive coordinator. Revis stated that he is not holding out. He reported to camp on time, as expected. If Darrell Revis wanted to hold out for a better contract, he would not be at training camp. I believe that.
Media is all hype
The media loves to blow things out of proportion. Darrell Revis is not holding out by sitting on the sidelines with some feigned injury. This is training camp, not the playoffs. He is expected to get out and perform as soon as the season starts. It makes no sense to put pressure on his hamstrings if they are tight or strained. The last thing Gang Green needs is to lose Revis to a hamstring injury during preseason. Let him nurse his wounds on the sidelines so he will be healthy when the team needs him.
About Darrell Revis
Revis started with the New York Jets in 2007. By NFL standards he is small, standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 198 pounds. In 2011, he had four interceptions. Darrell Revis' longest interception in 2011 was for 100 yards, resulting in a touchdown for the Jets.
That particular interception, against Brandon Marshall of the Miami Dolphins, was a beautiful thing to watch. I never tire of seeing the replay. This is why Revis is called the best cornerback in the NFL. By the way--it was not pass interference.
