Daniel Cormier Steps in to Face Jon Jones at UFC 178 After Alexander Gustafsson Injured

The Jon Jones vs. Alexander Gustafsson has been put on the shelf due to injury. But what is Gustafsson’s loss is Daniel Cormier’s gain.

Gustafsson suffered a knee injury that has forced him out of the bout, according to UFC officials on Wednesday. With Gustafsson unable to fight, the promotion shifted its focus to Cormier, who accepted the fight and will challenge for Jones’ light heavyweight title at UFC 178 on Sept. 27 in Las Vegas.

Jones (20-1) has only fought three times in the past two years, including a dominant victory over Glover Teixeira that followed his five-round epic decision victory over Alexander Gustafsson that necessitated a rematch.

Gustafsson dispatched of Jimi Manuwa while awaiting the opportunity for a rematch, but has now had the second shot at Jones snatched away by injury.

Cormier (15-0) has fought five times in the past two years, which included victories over the likes of Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, and, most recently, Dan Henderson.

Jones and Cormier have traded several barbs over social media, but will finally get to settle the score in the Octagon a little sooner that either had expected.
