Can the Dallas Cowboys Win a Super Bowl with QB Tony Romo? Fan’s Take

Tony Romo has the skills and heart to win a Super Bowl. But will he?

In the Beginning

On Monday October 23, 2006, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo replaced Drew Bledsoe in the second quarter against the New York Giants. The crowd gave Romo a standing ovation. On his first play, he threw an interception.

The Cowboys went on to lose that game 36-22. But that marked the beginning of the Romo era. I remember being excited when Romo took over, but that was almost six years ago. And the Cowboys have failed in the playoffs ever since. So I have to wonder if the Cowboys can ever win a Super Bowl with Romo at the helm.

On paper, Romo is more than qualified. He has a career quarterback rating of 95.5. He averages more than 250 passing yards a game. He completes 64.6% of his passes. He has thrown 154 touchdowns against 80 interceptions. It appears that Romo definitely has the skills to play quarterback in the NFL.

Romo seems to have the heart to win. Last season, Romo led the Cowboys to a road victory against the San Francisco 49ers. And he did it with a fractured rib. It was a gutsy performance that reminded me how special Romo can be. In the first game of the 2012 NFL Season, Romo and the Cowboys defeated the Giants at MetLife stadium in prime time. It was a clutch win for Romo that spoiled the Giants' Super Bowl ceremony.

Question Marks

Romo can be very good, and he can be very bad. In the previous game against the Chicago Bears, Romo threw five interceptions. The Cowboys were embarrassed at home, in front of a national television audience. Then there's that little thing known as the NFL Playoffs. While Romo has put up some very good career numbers, better than even Giants quarterback Eli Manning, he has just one playoff win in four tries. And how has Manning done in the playoffs?

To Be Fair

Romo doesn't deserve all the blame. It takes an entire team and coaching staff to win a Super Bowl. Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway failed in the playoffs for 14 straight years. Then he won two Super Bowls, thanks in part to a tremendous running game. Maybe Romo just needs the right pieces around him?

Like it or not, the Cowboys are invested in Romo. I really do believe that Romo can win a Super Bowl for the Cowboys. But will it happen? That remains to be seen. And it may or may not be in Romo's control.
