With Dale Earnhardt Jr. doing so well in the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series I have to admit I have somewhat forgotten about his NASCAR Nationwide Series team. This isn't a typical thing for me as I pride myself in being the kind of Dale Jr. fan who not only supports him, but also those who drive for him. However, part of the reason I have not been paying very close attention to the Nationwide Series this year is because the drivers on Dale Jr.'s team have had lackluster performances at best. This must be a fact not lost on Dale Jr. as he has been retooling his Nationwide team and all indications point to him expecting a serious run from his team in 2013.
Business and Family
If there is any indication as to just how serious Dale Earnhardt Jr. is about his team being competitive in the Nationwide Series next season it would be the big shakeup at JR Motorsports. In fact, Dale Jr. has had to make some hard decisions in regards to who should stay and who should go, which is never easy, but he had to let two of his family members go. Included in the departure from JR Motorsports were Dale Jr.'s uncle, Tony Eury Sr., and his cousin, Tony Eury Jr. While Dale Jr. admits these decisions were hard ones to make, he set aside his personal feelings for what he felt was best for his race team overall.
While I am sad to see the Eurys out of the fray at JR Motorsports, I am happy to see that something is being done to address a team whose results just don't add up to be what they should. With only six races remaining in the 2012 NASCAR Nationwide Series, both of JR Motorsports' full-time drivers remain winless and Cole Whitt sits at seventh place in the point standings while Danica Patrick sits in eleventh. Certainly not results that should be coming from a top-tier NASCAR Nationwide Series team.
This has been a problem for some time now. In fact, the last win by a driver for JR Motorsports was back in September of 2010 when Jamie McMurray took the checkered flag. That seems like a distant memory now and, as a fan, I'm extremely happy that Dale Jr. is addressing the situation before it gets any worse.
Championship Run Forthcoming?
While nothing is certain, especially in racing, I'm personally excited to see what the multiple changes at JR Motorsports will equate to on the track in 2013. Even though his plan might take longer than a season to complete, it is certainly evident that Dale Earnhardt Jr. is dedicated to making sure his NASCAR Nationwide Series team is one of the best and one that will be running hard for a championship.
Jimmy Collins has been a loyal fan of NASCAR since he was a child attending races watching Dale Earnhardt run the famous number 3. He still attends numerous races each season and enjoys writing about NASCAR, particularly in regards to Dale Earnhardt as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr.
