D.C. United trades Brandon McDonald to Real Salt Lake

Real Salt Lake has acquired defender Brandon McDonald from D.C. United in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2014 MLS SuperDraft and a conditional pick in 2015.

“With the injuries we have had to our center backs we felt it was important to add a talented experienced center back and we got that with Brandon,” Real Salt Lake general manager Garth Lagerwey said

McDonald, 27, had been a fixture at center back for United in the past two seasons, but fell out of favor after some poor performances in the 2013 campaign. He was originally acquired in a trade with San Jose in June 2011, and made 63 appearances overall (62 starts) during his time in Washington.

“We want to thank Brandon for all of his contributions on and off the field during the past three seasons, and we wish him the best of luck with his new club,” said D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper.

McDonald will help RSL deal with an injury crisis at center back, as Kwame Watson-Siriboe, Chris Schuler and Carlos Salcedo are all currently out injured. Watson-Siriboe is out for the year with an ACL tear.
