D.C. United picks up former U.S. youth international Jared Jeffrey

Former U.S. youth international Jared Jeffrey will join D.C. United on July 9, once the international transfer window opens, the club announced on Wednesday.

D.C. picked up the midfielder through a waiver draft. The 23-year-old moves to MLS from Bundesliga club Mainz, where he made 87 appearances for the reserve squad.

“We are pleased to add another quality young player to our squad in Jared Jeffrey,” D.C. United general manager Dave Kasper said. “He is a technically gifted midfielder who has solid experience at various U.S. youth national team levels and recently with Mainz. We look forward to his future contributions to our club.”

After coming through the residency program at Bradenton, Jeffrey represented the United States at the 2007 U-17 and 2009 U-20 World Cups. He was on the U.S. U-23 team that failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.

In 2008, as an 18-year-old, Jeffrey joined Club Brugge. He moved to Germany a year later.
