On Monday, April 9, 2012, Cris "Cyborg" Santos appeared before the state commission to request to have her sentence reduced from one year to six months. Unfortunately, the California State Athletic Commmission (CSAC) refused to honor her request. She is ineligible for a license to fight until December 17, 2012. That means fans might not see Cyborg in the cage until winter or spring 2013, unless Strikeforce squeezes in a late year event. That is a long time to wait between fights.
Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos updated fans on her Facebook page, "I want to thank all my fans, friends, coaches, legal counsel, and sponsors who are with me. Unfortunately, we could not reduce my penalty. I'm sad. But, after a storm in the morning, see the sun shine. Nothing like a day after another day. Soon I will come back better than ever, I promise. Thank my God, always keep praising You."
Cyborg suspension works in Rousey's favor
Meanwhile, Strikeforce women's champion, Ronda Rousey is waiting for her turn back in the cage. Ronda's been spending time training with Nick Diaz, another banned fighter who is in trouble with an athletic commission. Ronda tweeted that she was, "...On the way to my first biking experience with @LayzieTheSavage @nickdiaz209 and @IamLove7 wish me luck."
I do wish her luck. Looks like Ronda has found a home away from home with the Diaz brothers. LayzieTheSavage from MiddleEasy.com tweeted a photo of him and the crew celebrating Easter with Familia Diaz, "@rondarousey @iamlove7 and myself enjoying a nice Easter at @natediaz209's http://instagr.am/p/JL3V0vs5sz/"
I would like to see Ronda mix it up with Cyborg. But, Ronda is still improving her striking skills--something she will definitely need if she ever faces Cyborg in a five round match. I wonder how the powers that be on the Strikeforce executive team will deal with Cyborg when she returns. If the only fights, Strikeforce is booking for women are contested at the 135 lbs. weight limit, will post-banned-substance Cris Cyborg drop a weight class?
Maybe with the changes her body mass will undergo during her time of being clean, she might be able to cut weight to face Ronda and the rest of the squad as a 135er.
Without a chemical boost, Cyborg is still a beast, skill-wise. Cyborg, at any weight. is a scary prospect for anyone currently on the Strikeforce list of female fighters.
Meanwhile, Sarah Kaufman is still contender in waiting
Still no word for when former Strikeforce champion, Sarah Kaufman will have her shot at Ms. Rousey's title. I wonder if that will happen in 2012 or if Strikeforce will wait for Cris Cyborg to return at the end of the year. A fight between Cyborg and Rousey on the same card as former champions, Miesha Tate and Sarah Kaufman in a rematch would be huge.
