Cubs acquire C Kottaras from Royals

The SportsXchange

Adding to their catching depth, the Chicago Cubs acquired George Kottaras from the Kansas City Royals in a cash deal Tuesday.

Kottaras, who was designed for assignment by the Royals last week, could take over as the backup to Cubs catcher Welington Castillo. The previous backup, Dioner Navarro, is a free agent who is not expected to re-sign with Chicago.

The 30-year-old veteran hit .180 with a .359 on-base percentage, a .370 slugging percentage, five homers and 12 RBIs in 46 games last season. He will be eligible for salary arbitration this winter.

Kottaras has a .214 career average with 29 homers and 96 RBIs over six major league seasons. He broke in with the Boston Red Sox in 2008, and he subsequently played for the Milwaukee Brewers and the Oakland A's before joining the Royals in 2013.
