Crosby, Harding, McQuaid finalists for Masterton

The SportsXchange

Pittsburgh Penguins center Sidney Crosby, Minnesota Wild goaltender Josh Harding and Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid have been announced as finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded to "the National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey."

The winner is selected from a poll of the 30 chapters of the Professional Hockey Writers Association, and a $2,500 grant is awarded to the Bill Masterton Scholarship Fund in the winner's name.

Despite missing most of the previous two seasons with concussion issues, then the first half of the 2012-13 season due to the lockout, the 25-year-old Crosby regained his star status this season. He collected 56 points in 36 games before suffering a broken jaw March 30 that ended his regular season. He's also a finalist for the Hart Trophy and Ted Lindsay Award.

Harding, 28, announced in November 2012 that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and then fought through the illness and earned a spot on the team's roster opening night.

McQuaid, 26, had two surgeries in September because of Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, which had caused blood clots to form. The operations were successful, and eventually returned in December. He tallied a goal, three assists and 60 penalty minutes in 32 games.
