Today is National Draft Day:

Coyotes' Bissonnette appeals suspension

The SportsXchange

Phoenix Coyotes forward Paul Bissonnette is appealing the automatic 10-game suspension he was issued for leaving the bench to join an on-ice altercation in an exhibition game with the Los Angeles Kings.

Bissonnette, a known enforcer, claims he was entering the game as part of a line change to replace Max Domi. However, Domi was still on the ice and made no move toward the Coyotes' bench.

If the suspension is not overturned, Bissonnette will miss most of the first month of the season without pay.

At 12:09 of the first period against the Kings, Bissonnette was assessed a game misconduct penalty under Rule 70.6, which states: "A game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on the player who was the first or second player to leave the players' or penalty bench during an altercation or for the purpose of starting an altercation, from either or both teams."

Based on his salary, the suspension will cost Bissonnette almost $38,000. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Bissonnette will be eligible to return to the Coyotes' lineup on Oct. 24 at Los Angeles.
