Coyotes acquire Erat from Capitals in four-player trade

The SportsXchange

The Washington Capitals traded forwards Martin Erat and John Mitchell to the Phoenix Coyotes for forward Chris Brown, defenseman Rostislav Klesla and a fourth-round pick in next year's draft, it was announced Tuesday.

The trade ends a disappointing year in Washington for Erat, who was acquired from the Nashville Predators for forward prospect Filip Forsberg last season. Erat, who prior to the trade was a consistent 20-goal scorer, registered just two goals in 62 games in Washington.

It was the second straight season he requested a trade, after previously asking out of Nashville.

The 31-year-old Klesla appeared in just 25 games for the Coyotes this season and was on waivers earlier in the year. Brown, 23, was Phoenix's second-round pick in 2009. He has 14 goals in the AHL this season. Both will be sent to the Capitals' AHL affiliate in Hershey, Pa.

Mitchell, 27, had six points in 20 games with Hershey this season.

The trade was the second of the day for both teams, with Washington acquiring forward Dustin Penner from the Anaheim Ducks for a fourth-round in this year's draft and Phoenix trading defenseman David Rundblad to the Chicago Blackhawks for a second-round pick this year.

The trade deadline is 3 p.m. ET Wednesday.
