According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys converted $4.56 million of Witten’s salary into a signing bonus, saving $3.65 million against the cap. Carr had his $14.3 million base salary for 2013 converted to $715,000.
The Cowboys freed up $4 million of cap space when reworking Ware’s deal on Wednesday. Per ESPN Dallas, OG Nate Livings also reworked his deal.
Austin had previously been rumored as a potential cap casualty. Nick Eatman of the team’s website said on Twitter that Austin's base salary was converted to bonus money, so he did not have to take a pay cut.
Teams need to be under the salary cap by March 12, the start of the 2013 league year. An extension for QB Tony Romo could further alleviate the Cowboys’ cap situation.
