Cowboys remain busy creating salary cap room

National Football Post

The Dallas Cowboys will be busy today moving numbers around as they finish several more contract restructures to ensure they are in compliance with the salary cap by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Dallas was in good shape and then the club made the decision to place the franchise tag on outside linebacker Anthony Spencer, who is moving to defensive end in the club’s new 4-3 scheme.

Now, the single easiest way to create cap space would be to hammer out the long talked about extension for quarterback Tony Romo, who has a cap figure of $16.8 million this season. But as David Moore of the Dallas Morning News reports, there is “no indication the two sides are close to an agreement.”

So, the Cowboys must find ways to cut cap room elsewhere. According to Moore, the team must shave about $7 million. Nose tackle Jay Ratliff, cornerback Orlando Scandrick, linebacker Dan Connor, backup quarterback Kyle Orton and guards Nate Livings and Mackenzy Bernadeau are all candidates for restructures and potential pay cuts, according to Moore.
