Cowboys release LB Connor

The SportsXchange

Facing a time crunch to reduce their payroll and get under the NFL salary cap by 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys released linebacker Dan Connor and restructured the contracts of cornerback Orlando Scandrick and offensive guard Mackenzy Bernadeau.

Connor started eight games in 2012 when the Cowboys were depleted at inside linebacker by injuries to Sean Lee and Bruce Carter, among others. He's a versatile linebacker who could play all three positions in a 4-3 scheme and adds value as a special teams player.

Bernadeau was a disappointment in his first season with the Cowboys in 2012. He signed as a free agent last March. Bernadeau, 27, played his first four seasons with the Carolina Panthers but started only 20 games. He started every game for the Cowboys last season.

Scandrick serves as the third cornerback in nickel packages and with Mike Jenkins entering free agency, Scandrick could see even more playing time in 2013.
