Cowboys OTA’s: Who’s jobs are in jeopardy?

OTA’s are finally under way and the Dallas Cowboys are back on a football field. Seeing the beautiful star on the helmet of players trying to prove their worth is one of the best parts of the off-season. Underneath the star is blood, sweat and tears. Some will shed more tears than other as the off-season moves forward because jobs will be on the line. Camp will be here before you know it and there’s a few names to keep in the back of your mind who’s job or role is in jeopardy.

Doug Free – With news breaking today of Ron Leary requesting a trade, I instantly thought of Doug Free. Reason being, there’s been a youth movement since Jason Garrett took over in 2010. Leary is currently a back up behind second-year pro La’el Collins. After 2015, Collins earned the starting job. Leary was inactive for most of the year without any injury. After being placed on a tender and no teams willing to trade draft picks, Leary is currently in no mans land. Leary would make a great back up and provide great depth for the Cowboys. However, Leary would be a star starter on any teams offensive line.

With the young talent the Cowboys have accumulated over the past five years there’s no room for Leary. I feel Doug Free will have the same fate. Doug Free could lose his starting role with Chaz Green. Chaz missed all of his 2015 rookie year. This year he hopes to prove his 3rd-round selection was warranted. He has a chance to prove the Cowboys right for passing on many running backs with their third-round pick in 2015, to take Green. It’ll be a interesting battle to watch as the off-season progresses.

Darren McFadden – this is the most obvious star in jeopardy after drafting Zeke Elliot. For a guy who rushed over 1,000 yards after being named the starter in week 8 of 2015, you would think his job with be safe. However, after signing Alfred Morris a two time pro bowler and re-signing Lance Dunbar it’ll be tough to keep McFadden. In my opinion McFadden doesn’t fit their running scheme. Dunbar is the proven best fit and it was evident weeks 1-3 of last season. McFadden has taken 1st team reps so far in OTA’s but it’ll be interesting to see how quickly that changes.

Devin Street – When Dez Bryant went down with injury last season I thought Street would break out. Derek Dooley has been on record saying if Street had the chances Terrance Williams did in 2014 he’d have the same numbers. I was disappointed by Streets play in 2015. With the addition of Brice Butler in 2015, Street could be out of a job. I think Brice Butler will prove to be the better receiver. It’s a big year for Butler and Street because it’s the last year of Terrance Williams deal. If Williams leaves in free agency, Butler or Street could move to the number two spot.
