Cowboys Looking to Avenge Week One Loss to Giants

Cowboys

In week one of the 2016 NFL season, the Giants narrowly defeated the Cowboys, 20-19. Since that game, Dallas has been virtually unstoppable — realing off eleven straight wins with two rookies leading the way. Thirteen weeks later, those same Giants are 8-4 and essentially fighting for second place in the NFC East.

Sure, it’s possible the Cowboys lose three straight games to choke away the NFC East crown. It’s just highly unlikely that they lose and the Giants win out. Both teams play the division-leading Detroit Lions at home, which is probably their toughest test outside of this head-to-head match up. Other than that, neither has too tough of a schedule over the final four weeks.

What is really remarkable though, is how much the perception of the Cowboys has changed from then to now. In week one, they were a mediocre team with a rookie quarterback and no defense. The Giants looked to be on the rise with Odell Beckham Jr, Oliver Vernon and Janoris Jenkins playing well. It’s not as though the Giants have fallen off, it’s more about the Cowboys coming alive.

Cowboys Nation has been waiting for this kind of season. 2014 was great, but there were too many question marks surrounding that team. Would they pay to keep elite rusher DeMarco Murray? Could Romo sustain the high level of success from his all-time great 2014 campaign?

The hope came crashing to a halt in 2015. Another Romo injury. Another injury to Dez Bryant. Joseph Randall flamed out. A defense that was considered a joke around the NFL. Fast forward to the 2016 Preseason, and Tony Romo goes down again. Fans were crushed. They hadn’t drafted or signed a competent backup QB. Just a 4th-round “project QB” in Dak Prescott.

When Cowboys wide receiver Terrence Williams wasn’t able to get out of bounds in the week one loss to the Giants, things looked bleak for this team. What folks weren’t counting on was the resolve of that 4th-round rookie QB. What people were forgetting was Dallas has the best offensive line in the league. And top things off, they had a young running back named Zeke who was very hungry.

Thirteen weeks later, most are predicting a Super Bowl appearance at a minumum for this Cowboys team. That may be the case, but first the Cowboys get a chance to avenge their only blemish on the season.
