Couturier leads Flyers' 3rd-period comeback vs. Wings

DETROIT -- Philadelphia Flyers coach Craig Berube mostly liked the way his team was playing against the Detroit Red Wings after two periods on Wednesday night. Unfortunately, they were still down a goal.

He told them what he thought was wrong at the second intermission and his players responded.

Center Sean Couturier scored two goals and added two assists as the Flyers scored four goals in third period to rally for a 6-3 come-from-behind win over the Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena.

"Stay out of the penalty box," Berube said he told his team between the second and third periods. "I liked our game, we were playing a good game. You can't go in the box three or four times period and give them 5-on-3s."

Philadelphia took five penalties in the second period and surrendered a 5-on-3 power-play goal.

Couturier got the game winner 8:29 into the third period by tipping in a shot by winger Steve Downie.

"It's good for the confidence. But this was a team game and team success," Couturier said. "All four lines were rolling. We just wanted to get some chances and capitalize on some chances."

Couturier's line had a big night as his linemates, left winger Scott Hartnell and right winger Matt Read, each had a goal and two assists.

"They just keep plugging along and doing the right things," Berube said about the unit. "They keep backchecking and that puts them in the right position for offense,"

Downey and center Claude Giroux each had a goal and an assist each for the Flyers (13-13-2).

Philadelphia goaltender Steve Mason stopped 32 shots.

Left winger Tomas Tatar scored twice and center Johan Franzen scored for Detroit (14-8-7). Red Wings netminder Jimmy Howard made 28 saves in the loss.

"In the end I thought we had things going pretty good for ourselves through two," Detroit coach Mike Babcock said. "The third period wasn't good enough, they were better than us. They were better than us because they lit us up on the power play."

Giroux tied it at 3 with a power-play goal 5:15 into the third period. He got his fifth goal on a shot from the top of the left circle.

After Couturier's winner, Hartnell made it 5-3 with a power-play goal 9:58 into the third for his sixth goal. Couturier added an empty-net goal in the last minute to close out the scoring.

Read scored from the front of the net with 3:22 remaining in the second to pull the Flyers to within 3-2. It was his ninth goal.

Detroit scored twice in less than two minutes in the second period to take a 3-1 lead.

Franzen beat Mason with a slap shot from the top of the left circle off the rush to break a 1-1 tie at 8:24. It was Franzen's eighth goal.

Tatar got his second goal on the night on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 3-1 by putting in a loose puck from a goal-mouth scramble with 9:47 left in the middle period. It was Tatar's fifth goal.

Red Wings left winger Justin Abdelkader hit the goal post on a partial breakaway with 1:32 left in the first. He went to the locker room late in the second period after being shoved into the boards from behind by Flyers' defenseman Luke Schenn, who got a charging penalty. Abdelkader returned in the third period.

Tatar's first goal of the night opened the scoring with 9:43 left in the opening period. It came on a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle.

Downie's power-play goal tied it with 6:12 remaining in the first period. He beat Howard with a wrist shot from the inside edge of the right circle.

NOTE: The Red Wings were without both of their star centers, Pavel Datsyuk and captain Henrik Zetterberg. Datsyuk missed his fifth game with a concussion and Zetterberg sat out his first contest due to a herniated disc in his back. Zetterberg is expected to miss at least two weeks. ... Flyers' C Vincent Lecavalier missed his second game with back spasms. ... . Detroit RW Todd Bertuzzi missed his sixth game with an upper-body injury. ... Philadelphia RW Adam Hall is from the Michigan City of Kalamazoo and played at Michigan State. ... Red Wings D Danny Dekeyser, who missed seven games and is on long-term injured reserve with a separated left shoulder, began skating Wednesday morning.
