After the New England Patriots moved to 3-0, starting two quarterbacks not named Tom Brady, the talk moved to what magic they might have to invoke to remain unbeaten before Brady’s return in Week 5.

Jimmy Garoppolo left the Week 2 win against the Miami Dolphins, replaced by third-round pick Jacoby Brissett. In Week 3, Brissett stepped in and was solid in the 27-0 win against the Houston Texans. But the Patriots found themselves perilously close to not having a healthy QB on the roster.

Brissett injured his thumb in the game last Thursday, and initial reports the following day suggested that surgery might be needed. That opened the incredible possibility of receiver Julian Edelman, a college QB with one NFL pass attempt (a TD, but still) playing quarterback against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4.

Now, it appears that the Patriots not only might have avoided disaster but that they might be in really solid shape for Sunday.

If that’s the case, expect Garoppolo to start and Brissett as the backup in the game at Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots are darned good the past few seasons. Sorry, Jules — your QB dreams might have to wait. Bills head coach Rex Ryan said he was prepared to face anyone but Brady, who can report back to the team starting 12:01 a.m. Monday morning.

Being 4-0 without Brady would be an incredible development. Welcome back, Tom … the Porsche is fueled up and ready to go, just like you like it!
