Signed as a second string running back earlier in the offseason, Reggie Bush came to the Buffalo Bills looking locked in as a week one roster selection. Heck, head coach Rex Ryan even designed a “Ferrari” system around Bush so that the speedster could make even more of an impact on the Bills offense.

However, with the emergence of rookie tailback Jonathan Williams and Mike Gillislee also performing at the end of last season for Buffalo, could the Buffalo Bills consider cutting Reggie Bush. So far this preseason, Bush has had almost no impact on the success of the offense. Running for a grand total of 16-yards, Bush has not been majorly successful in kick return game and has also fumbled the football twice.

While his speed in the past has been difference making, Bush has thus far been unable to breakthrough in the NFL. Not getting any younger and already having suffered his share of injuries during his career, Bush may be more of a liability than anything else. Add into the fact that Bush will be taking up a roster spot which could go to someone more deserving and the Bills have a decision to make.

During his last two NFL seasons with the Lions and 49ers, Bush has only appeared in 16 of a possible 32 games. Between those two season, the eleventh year player only has recorded 84-yards rushing. In just five games last season, Mike Gillislee managed to record 267-yards.

I will also admit that Gillislee has definitely had less of a career than Bush making Bush a safer selection in terms of experience. Again though, Gillislee proved last season that he can perform in the Bills offense while Bush hasn’t. Why take that risk when LeSean McCoy, Gillislee and Jonathan Williams already have the look of a powerful rushing trio.

If you also consider the preseason week three performance of Daniel (Boom) Herron in the passing game then Reggie Bush has no appeal. Herron has already done much more in the receiving game than Bush this preseason. If you want to keep four backs, why not retain Herron and let Bush walk?

It will definitely be a tough choice for the Buffalo Bills front office. Unlike myself, they may not even be considering such a move. However, in my opinion they should be. Very few backups should be guaranteed a roster spot and Reggie Bush is no exception to that rule.
