Even though it would take years to happen, there has been talk of making a rule change regarding the belly and broomstick putters that have become so popular. Everyone has something to say on the matter, whether they are for or against them.
The issue is that the longer putters provide the ability to "anchor" them to your body, giving extra stability. With the traditional putter, you must control all of the motion with your form.
The question is how to go about making a rule that would work in this situation. At a press conference on February 7, 2012, Tiger Woods addressed the issue. He is a traditionalist and is all for having the long putters banned. Woods' take on a rule change is to not allow a putter to be longer than the shortest iron in your bag.
With that sort of rule in place, I'm sure some wise guy golfer would have an iron in his bag the length of a fishing pole so he could get away with his long putter. All joking aside, it is tougher to make a rule regulating putter length than you may think. If you tried to make a rule limiting the putter's actual length, it would be unfair to the taller players who need a longer putter.
Some golfers, like Tiger Woods, feel like the longer putters take away from the art of putting, using the traditional technique. Others feel like it is an improvement, and have embraced it.
My view on the topic is that it should be banned to keep everyone on an even playing field and to preserve the integrity of the sport. It would be like if some baseball players used an aluminum bat while some kept hitting with a wooden one. Things would be far from even.
It will be several years before any changes take place, if ever. Until then, if it's working for you then keep doing what you're doing. As Ernie Els said, "As long as it's legal, I'll keep cheating like the rest of them."
Elias Bond grew up playing golf, and played religiously through high school and college. He still tries to find time to get out there for a round or two now and again, but seems to watch more than play these days.
