Contract extension makes Ravens' Harbaugh one of highest paid

Hours before the defending Super Bowl champion Ravens took the field to kick off the season in Denver on Thursday night, Baltimore rewarded head coach John Harbaugh by extending his contract.

Numerous outlets reported that the 50-year-old Harbaugh and the Ravens agreed to a multiyear contract extension. Harbaugh had two years left on his previous deal. The new deal, which runs through 2016, will pay Harbaugh nearly $7 million a season for the next four seasons.

Terms of the new contract had been negotiated throughout the offseason. His extension makes Harbaugh one of the highest paid coaches in the league. Only New Orleans' Sean Payton, New England's Bill Belichick and Andy Reid of the Chiefs have higher salaries.

Since taking over the helm of the Ravens five years ago, Harbaugh has a 54-26 regular-season record. He has won three AFC North titles as well as last season's Lombardi Trophy.
