Dolphins sign second-round OT Martin

Back in December, it was clear that the right side of the Dolphins’ offensive line would get a face-lift. After the draft and some minicamp, the picture remains murky, with at least five players all being candidates for two spots on the line that were manned by veterans Marc Colombo and Vernon Carey in 2011.

We hear that the Dolphins would ideally like second-round rookie Jonathan Martin to be ready to start on Day One at right tackle. Martin played both tackle spots at Stanford and had been projected, at times, to go in the first round. Martin will compete with Lydon Murtha, who missed all of 2011 but is a player we know the brass values after an impressive camp in '11. Murtha would be the top backup at both tackle positions if he doesn’t win the starting job.

At right guard, 2010 third-rounder John Jerry, who started 10 games there as a rookie but had only three starts last season, is expected to compete with the versatile Nate Garner and veteran free-agent addition Artis Hicks, who also could kick inside. Joe Philbin’s offensive line needs athletic players, so it’s not out of the question for an undrafted rookie to impress and factor into the training-camp battles on the right side.
