Common Compares Colin Kaepernick To Muhammad Ali
Common stopped by to speak to the ladies of ABC’s The View on Wednesday morning (Sept. 28), and he touched upon several hot-button topics pertaining to race and politics.
The Oscar-winner gave his two cents on one of the biggest conversations in the country- 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and his decision to kneel for the playing of the national anthem during NFL games. He believes that what Kaepernick is doing is very courageous, and he likens his actions to those of the late, great Muhammad Ali.
“I truly relate to what Colin Kaepernick is doing,” said the “Love Star” musician. “He’s standing up for justice. He sees things going wrong in our country. I think we all see it. For people to ignore it is like we’re not doing our duty as Americans, as children of God. I think the courage that Colin Kaepernick is showing is phenomenal…I haven’t seen an athlete take that type of stand since Muhammad Ali.”
Race will be a topic of discussion on Common’s upcoming EPIX’s docu-series, America Divided, which he executive produced. It premieres on Sept. 30 at 9 p.m.
Common also said that he tuned into the highly-anticipated first Presidential debate this past Monday, and he has his opinions about the candidates based on what he saw.
“Donald Trump is just not prepared to be a president,” he said to cheers from the audience. “He’s not that type of person that should be a president…I really got to see why Hillary Clinton is a better candidate. I mean, I obviously knew that. But to hear him just say phrases like ‘law and order,’ ‘make America great again,’ and not have any ideas about policies, and never said anything concrete…and it made me sad about America, that we do have people that really believe in what he’s saying. What is he saying?”
