Columbus signs Uruguayan-American midfielder Viana

Wil Trapp, a U.S. youth international and standout defensive midfielder at the University of Akron, signed a Homegrown Player deal with the Columbus Crew Thursday, becoming the fourth player to sign with the MLS side out of its academy.

“We’ve had our eye on Wil for some time, and we’re very excited to have him join the first team,” Crew technical director Brian Bliss said in a team release. “We always believed that he’d be signing for us at some point, and that day has arrived."

Trapp, 19, joins Matt Lampson, Ben Speas and Aaron Horton as academy products to graduate to the first team in Columbus. The year ahead is shaping up to potentially be a big one in the beginning of Trapp's career as the former NSCAA national high school player of the year fights for a place on Tab Ramos' U.S. Under-20 roster ahead of this winter's CONCACAF championship in Mexico, which serves as a qualifier for this summer's U-20 World Cup.

"Wil is a player that can get the job done, as he’s made big contributions to our youth system and Akron’s program as well," Bliss said. "He’s in the mix for the United States Under-20 World Cup squad, and we look forward to continuing his development right here in Columbus.”

According to the Crew, Trapp will participate in next month's U.S. U-20 training camp in Florida.
