Canada Under-23 defender Drew Beckie has signed his first Major League Soccer contract.
The Columbus Crew announced the Regina, Saskatchewan, born Beckie’s deal on Friday, after selecting him 28th overall in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft in January.
The 22 year old scored seven goals and added six assists in 78 games with the University of Denver during his college career.
“Drew has proven himself to be a hard-working addition to our team throughout preseason training camp,” technical director Brian Bliss told the Columbus Crew website. “He’s a coachable player that provides depth a multiple positions across our backline, and we’re excited to have completed his signing.”
Beckie has been involved with Canada’s underage program since the U-17 level, most recently participating in his country’s unsuccessful qualifying campaign for the London 2012 Olympics.
