The Colorado Rapids beat the Columbus Crew 2-0 in Ohio on Saturday.
It didn’t take long for the Crew to set the tone of the animated match. Within the first minute the Crew’s own Jairo Arrieta made a run towards the goal, causing Clint Irwin to make a poor decision of coming out of his box. The Costa Rican chipped it over the keeper towards the open goal, but the ball sailed wide.
In the eighth minute, Rapids forward Danny Mwanga sent the ball into the box, where Atiba Harris set it up beautifully for Edson Buddle to give the Rapids a 1-0 lead.
Columbus fought back, dominating the possession. Arrieta elbowed Rapids captain Drew Moor, resulting in the first yellow card of the match.
The first half came to an end with Columbus’ Federico Higuain and Tony Tchani taking long shots, forcing Clint Irwin into saves.
In the 69th minute, after a free kick, Rapids rookie Dillon Powers shot a low rocket towards the goal. The shot deflected through the legs of Crew Jeff Williams, but still made its way into the back of the net.
With a 2-0 win Irwin recorded his fourth clean sheet. Even more yellow cards were handed out, one of which was to Glauber, causing the Brazilian to miss the Crew’s next match.
With this impressive away win, the Rapids now have 15 points and move their way up to third in the Western Conference.
