The Indianapolis Colts--and the rest of the NFL--must have their 90-man roster trimmed down to 75 players by 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 27, but Indy is already ahead of the game, waiving 11 players on Aug. 26.
Defensive Backs Released
The defensive backfield took the biggest gutting in this wave of cuts, with four cornerbacks and two safeties being released. Those players are cornerbacks Cameron Chism, Antonio Fenelus, Terrence Johnson, and Chris Rucker, along with safeties Matt Merletti and David Caldwell.
Caldwell started 13 games last year and played in all 16, registering a total of 67 tackles and four passes defensed. He was picked up by the Colts as an undrafted free agent in April of 2010.
Rucker--a sixth-round draft pick of the Colts in 2011--played in 15 games last year, starting four of them. He finished the season with 36 total tackles and two passes defensed.
Johnson played in 10 games last season, starting two of them, after being signed to the team's practice squad on Dec. 23, 2010. He recorded a total of 37 tackles in 2011.
Chism, Fenelus, and Merletti were signed as undrafted free agents in April. All three are rookies.
Defensive backs weren't the only position to get trimmed in this wave of cuts. Linebacker Mike Balogun was also released by the team.
Balogun spent the 2010 season with the Buffalo Bills, the San Francisco 49ers, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the Washington Redskins, appearing in two games for the Bills during the regular season.
He then spent 2011 with the Dallas Cowboys and the Buccaneers but did not play in any games.
Balogun was signed by the Colts as a free agent on Aug. 15.
Offensive Players Released
Veteran wide receiver Quan Cosby is the most recognizable name from the offensive side of the ball, among those who were released.
Cosby played for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2009 and 2010, catching six passes for 71 yards in 32 games in black and orange. He suited up for the Denver Broncos for 10 games in 2011 before being released.
The Colts claimed Cosby off waivers on Dec. 28, 2011.
Rookies were also released. Running back Alvester Alexander, just signed as an undrafted free agent on Aug. 15, was among the roster casualties, as were OG Jason Foster and punter Brian Stahovich.
Both Foster and Stahovich were signed as an undrafted free agents in April.
Five more cuts have to be made by 4 p.m. ET on Aug. 27, and then the roster has to be down to 53 active players by Aug. 31.
The Colts have one final preseason game on the slate: at home against the Bengals on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. ET.
