The Indianapolis Colts signed free agent running back Chris Rainey to their active roster on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-9, 180-pound Rainey, who had a tryout on Tuesday with the Colts, last played in the NFL for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012.

Rainey saw action in 16 games last season and rushed for 102 yards on 26 carries with two touchdowns and had 14 receptions for 60 yards. On special teams, Rainey returned 39 kickoffs for a 26.5-yard average, which ranked fifth in the AFC and tied for seventh best in the NFL, and three punts for 16 yards.

Drafted in the fifth round in 2012 by the Steelers, he was released by Pittsburgh in the offseason after a string of off-the-field, including an alleged assault that his girlfriend later denied.

The speedster finished his college career at Florida in ninth place on the school's career rushing list with 2,464 yards and also set a Southeastern Conference record with six blocked punts. As a member of the Gators' track and field team, Rainey ran on a 4x100-meter relay team that won an NCAA championship in 2010.
