Colts safety Lefeged released from prison

Indianapolis Colts safety Joe Lefeged waived a preliminary hearing Tuesday on a gun-possession charge and was released on his own recognizance without bond, despite the prosecution's request.

Because Lefeged waived the hearing, where prosecutors would have the burden to show probable cause in order to proceed, Lefeged's case was automatically sent to the grand jury, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Lefeged, 25, had been in prison since early Saturday. After refusing to pull over, the vehicle was chased by police. Once the chase ended, the two were arrested and a handgun was found in the Chevy Camaro was driving, according to police. The arrest occurred in the northeast section of Washington, D.C., at 12:05 a.m.

Lefeged was held without bond because of a local statute regarding "dangerous crimes," Superior Court spokeswoman Anita Jarman told the paper.

Receipts found in the vehicle showed that Lefeged bought the handgun for $900, but had not been registered it in Washington, police said.

Colts spokesman Avis Roper told multiple media outlets that the team would not comment on the arrest because it is a pending legal matter.

Lefeged is entering his third NFL season. He signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2011 out of Rutgers and started four games last season.
