The Indianapolis Colts have been very active shaping their roster leading up to the start of 2012 season. General manager Ryan Grigson has constantly been looking for ways to improve the roster ever since he was hired in Indianapolis. Looking at the current makeup of the 53-man roster, it appears he's done just that.
The offensive side of the ball looks strong and is clearly led by rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. There is solid depth at running back and wide receiver. The one surprise there is the addition of receiver Kris Adams. Adams looked very good in the preseason and is a big receiving option for Luck and the Colts. The team used a waiver claim to add offensive lineman Mike Person from the San Francisco 49ers. Person adds depth to a struggling unit that features several newcomers. The team will need better play out of Winston Justice, Mike McGlynn, and Samson Satele when the season starts. I think that if the offensive line plays strong, the offense could be very good this year.
On defense the team looks much better than most fans will realize at first. The linebackers look very strong and deep this year. This factor could help the team dramatically on special teams as well. The team currently has a total of 10 linebackers on the roster. The biggest surprises are inside linebacker Mario Harvey and outside linebacker Justin Hickman. I think the defense will surprise people this year as the players get more accustomed to the scheme as the season goes on. Chuck Pagano is a great defensive coach and there is certainly talent on the roster. The secondary is also no longer as questionable as it was entering training camp.
Fans should be very happy with the job that Indianapolis has done building the roster this year. Fans shouldn't think that the team is done making moves either. Even after the initial cuts were made, the team claimed Person, safety Sergio Brown, and nose tackle Martin Tevaseu. Grigson has shown that he'll make whatever moves are necessary to put this team in the best possible position to win football games. I'm excited about the future of the team now that I can see more clearly what the final roster looks like. Fans out there should be excited for Indianapolis Colts football in 2012.
