The Colts placed CB Jerraud Powers and DT Drake Nevis on injured reserve and activated rookie NT Josh Chapman off the non-football injury list.
In eight starts this season, Powers made 45 tackles, seven passes defensed and one interception. Powers suffered a toe injury in the Colts’ win over the Dolphins.
Nevis played in nine games with three starts and recorded 20 tackles and one sack. He has a knee injury.
The Colts drafted Chapman, out of Alabama, in the fifth round of April’s draft.
The way we see it
Powers was struggling to pick up the new defense, but this is a major loss nonetheless. He had been their most consistent corner each of the past two seasons. The good news is that Darius Butler is coming off a terrific game, and he should quickly pass Cassius Vaughn as Powers’ replacement. The Colts now more than ever need Vontae Davis to make a swift return and start living up to the second-round investment the Colts made in him.
Though not a starter, Nevis was a significant contributor in the trenches, where he was starting to come on at a new position.
The Colts love the little they have seen from Chapman on the practice field. He could provide a major boost to the tandem of Antonio Johnson and Martin Tevaseu, neither of whom has nearly the upside of the rookie out of Alabama.
