Chris Wondolowski scored a hat trick, taking his season total up to 25 goals, to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 4-1 win over the Colorado Rapids.
The Earthquakes caused the Rapids to tremble within minutes of kickoff. Marvin Chavez connected with a set piece, giving San Jose the early lead after he pummeled the ball into the net.
In the 10th minute, Rafael Baca had an impressive run down the left side. The Tuxpan native crossed the ball to Chris Wondolowski, who chested in his 23rd goal this season and gave San Jose the two-goal advantage.
The second half began with Wondolowski scoring his 24th goal of the season. He shot from the top of the 18, and it deflected off Drew Moor into the back of the net.
In spite of a heavy lead, the Quakes continued to invade the Rapids defense. In the 83rd minute, Sam Cronin slipped a quick pass to Wondolowski. The 29-year old easily spun and placed the ball into the back of the net. He set the new club record for the most goals with 62. His tally of 25 this season is two off pace of Roy Lassiter's MLS record, which has stood since 1996.
In the 90th minute, Jason Hernandez received a red car for fouling Andre Akpan in the box. Akpan helped the Rapids avoid a shut-out by scoring the penalty kick. The Earthquakes walked away on top with the final scoreline reading 4-1.
