College football roundup: Three Pitt players face assault charges

The SportsXchange

Three Pittsburgh players are facing assault and conspiracy charges stemming from an alleged incident last month.

Running back Ray Graham, wide receiver Devin Street and defensive back Lafayette Pitts were charged Thursday night but not arrested, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported.

The players will face a preliminary hearing on Jan. 9.

No player suspensions appear imminent as the Panthers prepare to face Notre Dame on Saturday.

The university released a statement Friday saying he were aware of the charges.

"Those individuals have denied any involvement with the situation and have offered to speak with authorities, although to date they have not been questioned or received any court documents," the statement read. "We take matters of player discipline very seriously and will continue to cooperate with any investigation.

"However, we will not, and hope others will not, rush to judgment on these misdemeanor allegations. All three players will remain active members of our program while we gain more clarity on this situation."

Pittsburgh police said in a criminal complaint that as they tried to disperse a crowd from an intersection in Oakland on Oct. 21 the alleged victim, Karl Olsheski, told them that three men assaulted him but that he did not want medical attention or wish to file a police report.

---Oklahoma running back Damien Williams practiced on Thursday, but head coach Bob Stoops said Williams is questionable for Saturday's game against Iowa State because of an ankle injury. Williams leads the Sooners with 581 yards rushing and seven touchdowns.

---Ohio State announced Friday that it will play San Diego State at home on Sept. 7 next season, filling a vacancy created when Vanderbilt pulled out of a scheduled game. The Buckeyes game against Florida A&M, originally scheduled for Sept. 7, will be played Sept. 21.

---Oregon State cornerback Jordan Poyer, who leads the Pac-12 in interceptions, is questionable for Saturday's game against Arizona State because of a knee injury.
