College football roundup: Schiano could be candidate at Penn State

Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano could be a favorite to replace Bill O'Brien at Penn State if O'Brien leaves to take the Houston Texans' coaching job, NFL Network reported Sunday.

Reports circulated Saturday that O'Brien is negotiating a deal with the Texans, but other reports indicated that the Texans are still searching. reported last week that Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak and Schiano were interested in coaching the Nittany Lions if O'Brien leaves to take an NFL job.

According to the NFL Network report, Penn State is "ready to make a strong push" for Schiano and athletic director Dave Joyner is "mulling flying down to Tampa" to meet with Schiano.

However, Schiano denied interest in Penn State last week.

---The American Athletic Conference is withholding the $1.5 million Pinstripe Bowl payment from Rutgers, the Newark Star-Ledger reported.

According to the report, the AAC informed Rutgers officials that it plans to keep the money because of the legal dispute between the two sides regarding the school's buyout from the conference.

Rutgers is disputing that it owes the conference $10 million to leave for the Big Ten.
