College football roundup: Kentucky fires Phillips

The SportsXchange

Kentucky's Joker Phillips became the second college head football coach to be fired this season when Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart announced in an open letter released on Kentucky's official website on Sunday, saying Phillips will not be returning next season.

Phillips will remain the Wildcats head coach for the rest of the regular season, and Barhart said, the "search for a new head coach will begin immediately and will be managed internally."

Phillips was an assistant coach at Kentucky in 2008 when he was named coach-in-waiting, and he became the head coach in 2010 when Rich Brooks retired.

Phillips has a 12-23 record, including 4-19 in SEC play. This season, the Wildcats are 1-9 and 0-7.

--- For the 10th straight week, Alabama held on to the No. 1 spot in both major polls, which were released Sunday.

The top four -- Alabama, Oregon, Kansas State and Notre Dame --remained intact in the Associated Press media and USA Today coaches polls.

LSU dropped from fifth to No. 9 in both polls after its 21-17 loss to Alabama. Georgia, Florida State, Florida and Clemson each moved up in the top 10 after winning Saturday. Ohio State went from No. 6 to No. 5 in the AP poll, but is ineligible to be ranked in the coaches poll.

Toledo debuted at No. 25 in the coaches poll and No. 23 in the AP poll. It is the first time since 2001 that Toledo has been ranked by the AP.

---Arkansas linebacker Terrell Williams was suspended from the team indefinitely after his arrest Sunday morning for driving under the influence, reported.

Williams, 21, was also charged with driving left of the center lane and violated the state's implied consent law.

Williams had seven tackles in the Razorbacks' 19-15 win against visiting Tulsa on Saturday.

Williams is fourth on the team with 52 tackles.
