College football roundup: Eastern Michigan fires coach

Eastern Michigan announced Friday that it fired coach Ron English.

The school released a statement saying that English was "relieved of his responsibilities immediately."

The Eagles are 1-8 this season.

English, in his fifth season as Eastern Michigan's coach, went 11-46, including 7-30 in Mid-American Conference play.

The school said assistant coach Stan Parrish is the interim coach and it will immediately begin a "national search for a new head coach."

---Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota has a partially torn MCL in his left knee, according to television station KVAL in Eugene, Ore.

Mariota was wearing a brace over the knee during the Ducks' 26-20 loss to host Stanford on Thursday night.

Mariota, who is a Heisman Trophy contender, completed 20 of 34 passes for 250 yards with two fourth-quarter touchdowns. He acknowledged that his knee was a "little banged up." He appeared limited in running the ball and had minus-16 rushing yards.

---Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin has emerged as the top target of USC in the Trojans' search for a new head football coach, the Los Angeles Daily News reported.

According to the Daily News report, USC has also reached out to ESPN NFL analyst and former NFL head coach Jon Gruden.

---Michigan offensive lineman Taylor Lewan will not be disciplined by the Big Ten for twisting the face mask of a Michigan State player during last week's game, ESPN.com reported.

Michigan opted not to suspend Lewan, who is expected to start Saturday when Michigan hosts Nebraska.
