CHARLESTON, S.C. -- For one half Tuesday night, Old Dominion made shots and played the type of tough defense it's been known for the last 12 years under coach Blaine Taylor.

But then the Monarchs went back to missing shots and not being able to get stops, turning a 28-28 halftime tie into a 20-point deficit at TD Arena as they fell 76-65 to the College of Charleston for their ninth straight loss.

ODU (1-10) canned 13-of-26 field goals in the first half and held the Cougars, coming off an embarrassing 65-49 defeat to Division II Anderson (S.C.) Thursday night, to 43.5 percent shooting. But Charleston (6-4) was 16-of-26 in the second half, when it surged to a 72-52 lead with just over five minutes left.

Adjeri Baru was perfect from the field, going 8-of-8, and scored a game-high 20 points for the Cougars, who were averaging only 58.1 ppg. Andrew Lawrence added 17 points, six assists and five steals, while Anthony Thomas contributed 13 points.

DeShawn Painter led the Monarchs with 15 points and seven rebounds. Donte Hill added 11 points, while Keenan Palmore and Deion Clark each scored 10.
