Charleston, S.C. -- Trent Weidman scored 17 points and Andrew Lawrence added 16 points with five assists to lead College of Charleston to a Towson 75-58 in the season opener for both teams Friday night. It was the first of 10 consecutive road games to start the season for Towson. The Tigers were 1-31 last season under first-year head coach Pat Skerry, a former College of Charleston assistant. Providence transfer Bilal Dixon had 15 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Towson, which lost its opener for the fourth year in a row. Jerrelle Benimon, a transfer from Georgetown, had 23 points in his first game with Towson but also had five turnovers. Marcus Damas, another junior forward who averaged 12.5 points per game last season, missed his only two shots and did not score in 24 minutes of action. Towson's Mike Burwell, a transfer from South Florida, missed 8 of 9 shots and finished with three points. Towson closed the gap to 71-56 late in the game, but the outcome was not in doubt. Kris Walden had 10 points for Towson and Jerome Hairston had four assists. NOTES: Towson, with two returning starters, has not had a winning record since joining the Colonial Athletic Association in 2001. ... Doug Wojcik, a former teammate with David Robinson at Navy in Annapolis, made his coaching debut with the Cougars of the Southern Conference after seven seasons at Tulsa.
