College basketball roundup: Rutgers close to hiring Jordan

Former Rutgers great Eddie Jordan is on the verge of returning to the school to become head coach.

Yahoo Sports was first to report Jordan, an assistant coach with the Los Angeles Lakers, was negotiating a contract to take over the Scarlet Knights.

Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley, who was a former Scarlet Knights assistant coach, told Rutgers that he will return to Rhode Island for a second season.

Rutgers is attempting to fill its men's basketball coaching position that became vacant last week when Mike Rice was fired. He was let go after three seasons when video of physical and verbal abuse of his players in practices came to light. He originally was suspended three games in December, but reaction to the video becoming public caused Rutgers officials to change their mind.

Five players have been transferred in the past year.

---After leading Saint Louis to a 28-7 record and an NCAA Tournament berth this season, Jim Crews was named the school's head coach.

Crews had served as interim coach all season after Rick Majerus fell gravely ill and stepped down before he passed away in December.

--- Loyola (Md.) replaced Jimmy Patsos with one of his assistants on Friday, naming assistant G.G. Smith to fill the head-coaching vacancy left when Patsos departed after the season for Siena.

Smith, 36, is the son of Texas Tech coach Tubby Smith.

---Wisconsin-Green Bay officials are investigating allegations that men's basketball coach Brian Wardle verbally abused players.

The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported Thursday night that the school is looking into charges made by walk-on Ryan Bross and his family, who filed a complaint with the athletic department after the 7-foot-1 center who redshired this past season transferred to Concordia University.

---Texas sophomore point guard Myck Kabongo is skipping his final two collegiate seasons to enter the NBA Draft, the university announced.

Kabongo missed 23 games this season because of an NCAA suspension as a result of providing false information to university officials about receiving unauthorized airfare and personal training.

---San Diego State junior guard Jamaal Franklin plans to hire an agent and enter the 2013 NBA Draft. Frnaklin had one season of college eligibility remaining.
