Club Tijuana qualifies for Copa Libertadores knockout rounds

Club Tijuana secured passage to the knockout rounds of the Copa Libertadores Wednesday with a 1-1 draw with San Jose in Bolivia.

Three wins from its first three games set up the Xolos nicely. Despite a heavy reverse against World Champion Corinthians in Brazil, the point in Bolivia mathematically sealed qualification in Tijuana's first-ever run at the Copa Libertadores.

In the 65th minute against San Jose, Fidel Martinez blocked an attempted clearance by Ignacio Garcia. He poked the bouncing ball over the goalkeeper and finished the move off with a header on the goal line.

With fewer than 10 minutes remaining, Marcelo Gomez equalized. He played a quick one-two with Garcia in the box and slammed a shot into the roof of the goal.

A mostly reserve Xolos lineup held out for the draw, with American fullback Greg Garza entering in the 84th minute.

The result leaves Tijuana top of Group 5 with 10 points. San Jose, four points, trails Corinthians, seven points. Club Millonarios has three points at the bottom of the group.
