Club America sporting director Pelaez joins Herrera with El Tri

The Ricardo Pelaez-Miguel Herrera pairing that was so successful during 2013 with Club America and in guiding Mexico past New Zealand in the World Cup playoff will be in place for El Tri at Brazil 2014.

Pelaez confirmed on Wednesday that he will be leaving his post as sporting director at Club America on Jan. 15 to take up the same role with the national team.

The former Mexico international said he “would never turn down the national team,” but added that he hopes to return to Las Aguilas sometime in the future.

“It is hard to leave the best team (America), but I’m going to take on the challenge with the national team,” said Pelaez in a press conference.

America’s operational president Yon de Luisa added that the decision on whether Pelaez comes back will be up to him, and stressed that the structure is in place to cope with the losses of both Herrera and Pelaez in the space of less than a month.
Mexico opens 2014 with a friendly in San Antonio against South Korea on Jan. 29.
