Clint Dempsey will captain U.S. national team moving forward

U.S. Soccer has announced that Clint Dempsey will be the team's captain for the foreseeable future.

In a tweet on its official Twitter account, @ussoccer, the federation said "#USMNT @J_Klinsmann has confirmed that @clint_dempsey will be the captain of the U.S. National Team moving forward."

The Tottenham midfielder captained the USA in its two most recent World Cup qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico in March.

Carlos Bocanegra has served as the team's captain since 2007, but with the veteran defender being left off the squad the last two sets of qualifiers, head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has turned to the 30-year-old Dempsey to take his place.

Dempsey has been capped 94 times for the Stars and Stripes and with 32 goals, he is third on the country's all-time leading scoring list.
