Cleveland Indians Make No Splash at Trade Deadline: A Fan’s Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

As a fan of the Cleveland Indians I almost feel cheated. I have been told for the last couple of years that the window is open for the Tribe to contend. I have been told all the sacrifices would be worth it in the end. I have been told that the team is just a piece or two away from winning the division. I am then told the two pieces added before the 2012 trade deadline were Brent Lillibridge and Lars Anderson.

Quite frankly I am not surprised by the actions, or lack there of this season. I don't believe the team was ever in serious talks for a major transaction due to the lack of depth in the farm system, or the willingness to take on salary for a "rental" player. I will even speculate the only reason that Chris Perez, Shin-Soo Choo, and Justin Masterson were on the block in the first place was to say that not making a move solidifies "faith" in the current group of players.

I also hope no one thinks the fans to be that ignorant to believe that.

While we the fans are used to this disappointment year after year, I feel the most for the young, fresh out of college sales representatives who are responsible for selling the season ticket packages and various premium-seating options. Their job just got exponentially harder. Thankfully there is still a three-game series with the New York Yankees coming up, and even a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox for the few that view Boston as a "premium" series. Other than that, what is left?

We can only hope our beloved Indians can continue to provide thrills on the field for the remainder of the season. And just like every offseason, we can only hope the front office can lure a free agent or three to the team that is able to provide excitement. The team as it stands has quickly fallen from good to mediocre. They are a squad that falls right in the middle of the pack. Unfortunately mediocre will draw even less interest than a good team here in Cleveland. That should come as no surprise to anyone.
