The Cleveland Cavaliers looked good against a bad Washington Wizards team in their first game on October 30, 2012.
Anderson Varejao nearly had a triple double with nine points, 23 rebounds, nine assists, and two blocks. Don't expect that every night. The Wizards are bad. Kyrie Irving (29 points but only three assists) and Dion Waiters (17 points) had nice games. Tristan Thompson played well also. He had 12 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals.
This game may shed some light on how the Cavs are going to win ball games throughout the season. Irving will lead the way in scoring. His assists total will improve. Waiters will get his points and knock down big shots. Thompson and Varejao will control the glass and pick up easy buckets off of dribble penetration.
But what about the bench?
Scott had his second unit - Luke Walton, C.J. Miles, Donald Sloan, Tyler Zeller, and Daniel Gibson - in to begin the fourth quarter. The Cavs were up 74-62. That lineup allowed the Wizards to score eight points in the first four minutes without scoring any points. Alonzo Gee checked in but didn't help too much as the Cavs allowed another five points in two minutes to allow the Wizards to take the lead 76-74. The Wizards scored 12 unanswered points.
After the starters returned, the Cavs put the game away.
Luke Walton - He is a good passer and plays under control. Walton gives Scott a coach on the floor.
C.J. Miles - Miles wasn't great but either was Alonzo Gee. He'll get his chances.
Tyler Zeller - I like a big man who can knock down some shots. He'll get better.
Daniel Gibson - Gibson is another veteran big man who is hot or cold.
Donald Sloan - Sloan struggles on defense. He needs to run the team more effectively.
Omri Casspi and Samardo Samuels didn't get in the game which was somewhat surprising.
The bench lineup and rotation will change as the season goes on. Right now, the Cavs have six good players and a thin bench.
