Cleveland Browns Release Final Cuts List, Roster Set at 53: A Fan’s Reaction

Yahoo Contributor Network

On Friday, August 31 the Cleveland Browns announced 22 roster moves to get their squad at the required 53-player limit. There were certainly surprises in the group while others came as no shock at all.

Waived (18):

Dominic Alford, OL

Ronnie Cameron, DL

Josh Cooper, WR

Stanley Daniels, OL

James Dockery, DB

Garth Gerhart, OL

William Green, DL

Dan Gronkowski, TE

Benjamin Jacobs, LB

Ernest Owushu, DL

Brian Schaefering, DL

Jarrod Shaw, OL

Jeff Shugarts, OL

Brad Smelley, FB

Quinton Spears, LB

Adonis Thomas, RB

Kiante Tripp, DL

Rod Windsor, WR

Contract Terminated (2):

Evan Moore, TE

Seneca Wallace, QB

Reserve/Suspended by Commissioner (1):

Scott Fujita

The Browns have also traded DB David Sims to the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional 2013 draft pick. Sims, while performing admirably during the preseason, was not expected to make the final 53-player roster.

Among the major surprises was the decision to terminate the contracts of Wallace and Moore. With rookie Brandon Weeden as the starting quarterback and Colt McCoy as his backup, it made perfect sense to let Wallace try to find work elsewhere. Thaddeus Lewis was kept on as the "project" quarterback while he continues to develop.

Moore simply fell victim to a crowed tight end position. With Benjamin Watson as the veteran starter and Jordan Cameron quickly developing into a threat at the position it came down to Alex Smith, Dan Gronkowski, and Moore for the final spot. Coaches felt Smith would be the more valuable piece leaving Gronkowski and Moore unemployed.

Another minor surprise was the decision to keep Chris Ogbonnaya over Adonis Thomas. The Browns are already deep at the running back position with rookie Trent Richardson, Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson. Ogbonnaya came through for the Browns last year due to the rash of injuries at the position but I was still very impressed with Thomas' camp and play during the preseason. Hopefully he will stay with the team on the practice squad, but he can still find work elseewhere if another team saw in him what many fans did. WR Josh Cooper is another player I would like to see remain in the Browns' system on the practice squad.

The exciting part now, is with hundreds of new free agents on the market, will the Browns make additional moves to improve the team for the regular season?
