Reserve Clemson defensive tackle Carlos Watkins suffered a broken leg in a fatal one-car accident Saturday in North Carolina.
Police told WLOS-TV of Asheville, N.C., that Watkins was trapped in the car for more than hour before being taking to a hospital where he spent Saturday night.
A 21-year-old passenger died when the SUV the men were in hydroplaned and struck a power pole, police said.
Clemson players had the weekend off. The No. 3-ranked Tigers defeated North Carolina State, 26-24. Watkins, a sophomore, has five tackles, including 1 1/2 for loss, in three games this season.
According to the Charleston Post and Courier, police do not believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
The crash occurred on the same day that University of Cincinnati freshman offensive lineman Ben Flick was killed in an auto accident in Oxford, Ohio.
