Clemson easily beats Coastal Carolina 69-40

AP - Sports

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) -- K.J. McDaniels scored 22 points and added seven rebounds as Clemson continued its hot start and got some much-needed revenge against Coastal Carolina in a 69-40 win Friday.

The Tigers (6-1) scored the game's first 13 points. The Chanticleers (2-5) missed their first 11 shots from the field before Josh Cameron's short jumper with 10:35 left in the half.

Clemson held a 33-21 halftime lead following a mostly dominant first half.

McDaniels' 3-pointer from the top of the key pushed Clemson's lead to 33-13 with 2:17 remaining, but the Tigers were scoreless the rest of the half. Wilson's 3-point play with 1.7 seconds left capped an 8-0 end-of-half run. The Chanticleers shot just 29 percent from the field while Clemson shot 37.8 percent and made 5 of 16 3-pointers.

Coastal closed to within 35-25 with 15:32 left, but Clemson sealed the game with an 11-2 run ignited by a McDaniels jumper and a McDaniels steal and feed to Rod Hall for a dunk. Back-to-back jumpers by Coleman and McDaniels extended the lead to 46-27 with 11:26 to play.

The Chanticleers didn't get closer than 19 points the rest of the way as Clemson emptied its bench.

Devin Coleman added 14 points for his second consecutive double-figure scoring game and played a season-high 28 minutes. Normal starting guard Jordan Roper sat with a concussion suffered Sunday against UMass, opening up minutes for Coleman.

Freshman guard Elijah Wilson led Coastal with 16 points.

Coastal Carolina had beaten the Tigers in each of the last two seasons, taking a 60-59 buzzer-beating win on the road in 2011 and whipping Clemson 69-46 a year ago at home.

Those were the Chanticleers' first-ever wins over Clemson, giving Coastal head coach Cliff Ellis a sweet feeling. Ellis coached Clemson from 1984-94 and led the Tigers to eight postseason appearances and the program's only ACC regular-season title. Earlier this season, Ellis entered Clemson's Athletic Hall of Fame.

Clemson took motivation from last season's whipping, watching game film of the blowout Friday afternoon.

Coastal Carolina shot just 28.3 percent from the field, making 2 of 15 3-pointers. The bigger Tigers dominated the Chanticleers on the boards, outrebounding Coastal 46-27 and shooting 43.4 percent from the field.

Clemson had eight blocks to Coastal's two and scored 22 points off turnovers while Coastal managed just 13.
