RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) -- Clarence Seedorf says he will become the new coach at AC Milan. He would succeed Massimiliano Allegri, who was fired the day before.

Seedorf made the announcement Tuesday at the Brazilian club Botafogo, where the midfielder has been playing. In Italy, AC Milan spokesman Riccardo Coli told The Associated Press that Seedorf still has to sign.

The 37-year-old Dutchman has no formal coaching experience and will be relying on his popularity and respect among players. He won the Champions League twice with AC Milan. He also won Europe's top club title with Ajax and Real Madrid.

AC Milan is in 11th place in Serie A and six points clear of the relegation zone. It squandered a two-goal lead in a 4-3 loss Sunday against Sassuolo.
