The Cincinnati Bengals roster is due for another cut today, and the practice squad will be named tomorrow, but there are some Bengals players already absent that the team will likely miss in 2012. Three are playing for other teams, and two were injured during the preseason, but all five were solid players who will leave a hole that needs to be filled:
- · Kyle Cook, Center, Cincinnati Bengals Injured Reserve
Of the five being named, Cook is the only one who may have potential to return late in the season. Kyle Cook's ankle injury could keep him out anywhere from eight to 16 weeks depending on his progress. A new NFL rule allows one player on injured reserve to rejoin the active roster after a minimum of six weeks of the season and Bengals hope that will be Cook.
Last night in the preseason game versus the Indianapolis Colts, backup center Trevor Robinson struggled to pick up his blocking assignment after the snap. The Bengals signed veteran Jeff Faine earlier this week and hope he will be a good fit having worked with offensive coordinator Jay Gruden as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Faine says he will be ready to start against the Baltimore Ravens in the opener September 10th.
- · Cedric Benson, Running Back, Green Bay Packers
There is a saying that if something isn't broken, don't fix it. Cedric Benson wasn't broken, but the Bengals decided not to re-sign him for 2012. Instead they picked up BenJarvus Green-Ellis from the New England Patriots.
In 2011, Cedric Benson had 273 carries for 1067 yard averaging 3.9 yards per carry. BenJarvus Green-Ellis had 181 carries for 667 yard giving him an average of 3.7 yards per carry. So the Bengals gave up a more active running back with a higher average yards per carry to pick up Green-Ellis. My fingers are crossed this is not a decision they not come to regret.
- · Jerome Simpson, Wide Receiver, Minnesota Vikings
Two things often come to mind when Bengals fans think of Jerome Simpson: his flip and his marijuana charges. What is often overlooked is that he was the Cincinnati Bengals number two receiver in 2011. Jerome Simpson had 50 catches for 725 yards last year averaging an impressive 14.5 yards per catch.
Though Simpson is suspended from the first three games of 2012 due to marijuana possession, the Bengals likely could have gotten a good deal on him because of this. Jerome Simpson is a talented athlete that always gave one hundred percent on the field for the Bengals.
- · Travelle Wharton, Guard, Cincinnati Bengals Injured Reserve
Bengals guard Travelle Wharton suffered a season ending knee injury in the first preseason game of the year against the New York Jets. The Bengals had high expectations of Wharton having just signed in March to a three-year $10 million contract.
Clint Boling will take Wharton's place, and should be effective, but Boling was the go to back-up for several positions and needing him as a starter will certainly affect the Bengals depth on their offensive line.
- · Bobbie Williams, Guard, Baltimore Ravens
Bobbie Williams was an integral part of the Bengals offense for eight seasons before signing a two year contract with the Baltimore Ravens for 2012 and will be missed even more due to the previously mentioned loss of Travelle Wharton.
On a personal note, my daughter and I met Bobbie Williams at a Bengals fundraiser last year and he was the kindest, friendliest player we had the pleasure of coming into contact with. He was known as a really good guy and leader by his teammates and will no doubt be missed both on and off the field in Cincinnati.
