Update: Carpenter is unlikely to pitch at all in 2013 after having a setback with the shoulder issues that kept him out for most of 2012, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Recommendation: Carpenter won't retire yet, but the chances of him pitching ever again are pretty low. He'll meet with the Cardinals' medical staff to determine his next set of options.
